The Benefits of Lemon wate

Sometimes instead of my morning cup of herbal tea I will pour myself a warm mug of lemon water. I love the freshness and “pick-me-up” feeling I get from drinking it. I truly believe it is important to start your day right, and in having a morning routine. Should you however start your morning off with warm lemon water?  The internet is of course bursting with facts and promises as to what the benefits of drinking lemon water are, and what it can do for your health. I’m not so convinced they are all true, so I did some investigating.

As I’ve mentioned before I like to start my day off with oil pulling before I have even had anything to drink or eat. After that, once my mouth is clean, I will make myself a cup of herbal tea or lemon water. That said if its summer and particularly hot, a glass of fresh water is just as good to wake the body up and get it going. Either way it’s good to always start with water as the body can easily become dehydrated over night.

So lets get into it, what are the real benefits of drinking lemon water?

Helps Digestion and Detoxification

Drinking warm water first thing in the morning can help flush the digestive system and rehydrate the body. If you’ve had a good 8 hours of sleep you would be some what dehydrated. The liver is very active during sleep since sleep is the body’s time to restore and regenerate. Drinking enough water, especially in the morning, helps make sure that the body can perform these jobs properly. By helping flush the body and improve digestion, drinking water can lead to cleaner skin.

Your body will so appreciate the rehydration and wake up call it recieves first thing in the morning from consuming water. Its a wonderful way to get the body and mind working. So never mind the lemon slice in your water, just drinking warm water is a good idea to start with.

Increases your daily Vitamin C intake and boosts the immune system

As humans we dont produce our own Vit C, so its important to get enough of it from the foods and drinks we ingest. This is where that slice of lemon in your water comes in usefull! Vitamin C stimulates white blood cell production, vital for your immune system to function well. Getting enough vitamin C helps the immune system keep colds and flu at bay and is also needed for collagen production for smooth, healthy skin.

Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning gives the body a chance to absorb these vitamins effectively and can provide a little immune boost. That said, it shouldnt be the only vitamin C you get into your daily diet.

The Alkalinity or pH balancing story..

Now while there are articles claiming it balances the pH levels in your body, this is not entirely true. There is a theory that certain foods can leave an acid or alkaline affect in the body. This is true, but this only affects the pH of the urine and not the pH of the blood. The body is a complex and amazing structure and each little puzzle piece that makes us up has its own unique pH balance.

Weight loss!

The one we all want to know about, right! Well there really is no substitute for a good balanced diet, exercise and plenty of sleep. But that’s a whole other article ;).

There is evidence that drinking water first thing in the morning can help maintain a healthy weight. Researchers have found that drinking enough water increases the metabolism.

Pectin, found in lemons also gives a feeling of fullness much like other soluble dietary fibers, this will leave you feeling fuller for longer, and less likely to feel hungry and have those sugar cravings.

While further research is needed about the weight loss benefits of lemon water, positive benefits are without a doubt achieved by replacing sugary drinks for lemon water.

So is lemon water the way to go?

Lemon waterIt’s always important to support our bodies by drinking enough water, especially first thing in the morning. Lemon water is not a miracle; weight depleting, IQ boosting, new age energy drink, but it’s certainly a better alternative to caffeinated drinks and does have its own added benefits. Some people are not happy or used to drinking water on its own. In that case, adding a slice of lemon could be just the thing you need to encourage you to getting more water in and staying hydrated.

Personally, I love it!

Start slowly if you are not used to drinking this much water in the morning, but start none the less.
